What Is Scanpan Made Of? Your Brand Questions Answered

Scanpan is a environmentally-conscious, Danish company that’s been manufacturing high quality cookware since 1956.

Scanpan cookware is made of 100% recycled stainless steel, and is assembled at its production facilities at Ryomgard, Denmark.

The longer answer is a little more complicated than this, however!

While the main body of each pot and pan is made from stainless steel, that cookware is then coated in Scanpan’s patented Stratanium non-stick coating.

This is a highly effective PTFE coating, road-tested in professional restaurants, before being rolled out to the consumer market.

In the rest of this guide, I’m going to answer some of the most common questions readers have about the construction of Scanpan cookware.

I’ve also included answers to other questions that might be of interest to you, if you’re thinking of investing in this brand.

(Head back to my massive cookware guide when you’re done for more help with this side of kitchen life!)

Is Scanpan made of Teflon?

No, Scanpan cookware does not feature Teflon surfacing.

It does contain polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which is used in all major non-stick coatings.

Note, however, that Scanpan is completely free of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

This is the chemical component of Teflon-like surfaces that has rung alarm bells in terms of health for some time.

Is Scanpan Chemical Free?

No, Scanpan cannot be considered chemical free.

As the company notes in its extensive FAQ, Scanpan cookware items do make use of a non-toxic chemical called PTFE.

This is a component of Scanpan’s patented non-stick coating technology called Stratanium. This is FDA-approved and perfectly safe for normal home cooking.

The PTFE in this stuff only degrades under exceptionally high cooking temperatures.

Use a Scanpan for regular, day to day cooking and it won’t break down into your food.

How Long Should A Scanpan Last?

This will depend entirely on how often you use your Scanpan cookware, and how much punishment you put your pots and pans through!

As a general rule of thumb, you can expect Scanpan cookware to last for around 2-3 years under normal usage conditions.

Does Scanpan Honor Its Warranty?

Yes, Scanpan has an excellent reputation for honoring the warranties it provides on its cookware.

Most of the reports I’ve read online suggest that Scanpan customer support handles these claims helpfully and professionally.

How Do I Contact Scanpan?

You can find the full contact details for Scanpan on the manufacturer’s official site.

How Can I Make My Scanpan Non-Stick Again?

All non-stick surfaces degrade over time. It’s just part and parcel of working with this sort of highly convenient cookware.

You can make a Scanpan non-stick again by following these instructions:

* Fill the pan to around an inch high with warm water.
* Add one tablespoon of baking soda for each cup of water you’ve used.
* Gently boil the contents for around 5 minutes.
* Leave the contents to stand for 30 minutes.
* Clean the pan as usual at this point.

If the problem persists, you can simply repeat the process a time or two. If that doesn’t finish the job, you can use something like Bar Keeper’s Friend.

As always, the most important thing is to clean your non-stick surfaces delicately.

To avoid this problem occurring in the future, it’s important to clean your Scanpan cookware quickly after use.

If you allow oils and food to build up on the pan over time, you may well notice that the non-stick of your Scanpan cookware starts to under-perform.

How Do I Deep Clean My Scanpan?

See the section above, and follow the steps for applying baking soda to the surface.

As always, a regular quick clean after each use will definitely prevent a bigger problem building up down the road!

What’s The Difference Between Scanpan Classic & Professional?

This is an easy one to answer.

The differences between the Scanpan Classic & Professional lines are largely cosmetic.

Handles

The Classic range features stay-cool handles that are not fastened to the pan with rivets.

The Professional range has stainless steel handles that are riveted to the pan. This, admittedly, provides a little extra durability in the long run!

Lids

Classic Scanpan cookware features glass lids.

Professional Scanpan cookware features stainless steel lids.

Coloring

The Classic Scanpan line features a dark gray interior non-stick cooking surface.

The Professional Scanpan line has a darker black non-stick cooking surface

All other things in terms of performance, strength and durability remain the same.

Can You Use High Heat With Scanpan Cookware?

You can use Scanpan items at high heat, but it’s recommended that you change your oil to suit the new cooking conditions.

For these jobs, I recommend switching over to a high-heat flash point oil such as rice, avocado, grapeseed or vegetable oil.

That last one’s probably the easiest to turn to, as you likely already have it in your cupboards!

Wrapping Up

I hope that’s given you a much better understanding of the materials a Scanpan is made of.

Those extra answers should also have given you the knowledge you need to decide if this is the right brand for you.

Happy cooking!
