Why Is All-Clad So Expensive? 5 Big Reasons

All-Clad makes a very appealing collection of cookware sets.

Appealing, that is, right up until the moment you turn over the price tag. You need a big budget to enjoy this kind of premium cookware.

What is it that makes All-Clad so expensive though? There are five main reasons:

Reason #1 – The Materials & Construction

All-Clad is a pioneer of bonded cookware, which offers superior cooking performance in just about every aspect.

In bonded cookware, each layer of metal has been chemically fused together for improved strength and performance.

Many manufacturers skimp a little here, however. They apply this metal “sandwich” to only the underside of the pan.

All-Clad bonded metal extends from the base, all the way up to the sides of the pan. This provides superior – and supremely even – heat distribution.

Reason #2 – Made (Largely) In The USA

The most high-performance – and therefore expensive – All-Clad cookware is manufactured in the USA.

The town of Canonsburg is the birthplace of All-Clad cookware, and it’s built to the company’s highest standards, using premium materials.

This obviously introduces additional costs when compared to the pair of All-Clad sets that are manufactured in China.

All-Clad’s been in operation for nearly 50 years at the time of writing this article, and has earned its reputation by refusing to compromise on the quality of its cookware production.

Although that means a higher cost, for many owners it’s a price worth paying.

Reason #3 – Built To Last A Lifetime

This is one of those issues where you really need to take a long-term view of things.

You can buy pots and pans that are considerably more affordable, but in a couple of years you’ll be shopping around for a new set.

All-Clad cookware is designed to be used for a lifetime of cooking if it’s cared for correctly.

Of course, this is only relevant if you’re fortunate enough to be able to make a big up-front investment.

If you want a tablet, you can throw a rock at the internet and find one that provides a great balance between cost and performance.

If you want an iPad, on the other hand, you can only get it from one place. So it is with All-Clad cookware.

Is All-Clad Cookware Worth The Money?

So, is an All-Clad set of pots and pans worth spending all that money on?

That’s something you’ll have to decide for yourself based on your own budget constraints and kitchen needs.

If you can justify the cost and want nothing but the best, there’s really no way to go wrong with this brand.

If you’re working to a tighter budget, however, you might like to think about avoiding the sets and buying individual pieces instead.

Don’t get me wrong, these are still expensive!

If the majority of your meal prep takes place in a saucepan though, it’s definitely worth considering starting small with that one piece.

Who Makes All-Clad Cookware?

The founding company was created by metallurgist John Ulam in 1967. 

Back in those days, the company focused on producing a variety of bonded metals beyond the kitchenware space.

In a stroke of good fortune, Ulam found himself in need of a new pan – and he knew just the kind of metal to start working with

All-Clad Metalcrafters – to give the company its full name – subsequently launched in 1971, and is now the cookware company we all know.

In 1988 the company was acquired by Pittsburgh Annealing Box Co.

In 2004, it was acquired by the current owners Groupe SEB.

Is All-Clad Cookware Non-Stick?

This depends on what you mean by “non-stick”.

With the exception of the Hard Anodized set, all of All-Clad’s most popular lines use an 18/10 stainless steel cooking surface.

Warmed correctly, these provide a pretty effective non-stick surface to work with.

If you want a true non-stick coating though, your only option is the Hard Anodized set.

This features an effective, PFOA-free surface which makes cooking and cleaning up much easier.

Some like to avoid using cookware with chemical coatings altogether though. It’s something you’ll have to weigh up when deciding whether this is the cookware brand for you or not.

Is All-Clad Cookware Dishwasher Safe?

Not every All-Clad cookware set is dishwasher safe. Here’s a quick run through of the most common product lines:

Dishwasher Safe

NOT Dishwasher Safe

I’m going to show some personal bias here, but I always wash my cookware by hand, regardless of what the manufacturer says. 

I want my pots and pans to last as long as possible, and I think hand washing goes a long way towards achieving this.

Is All-Clad Cookware Oven Safe?

All-Clad cookware is oven safe to varying degrees, depending on the precise set you settle on.

Here’s the breakdown, along with the maximum temperature tolerances as well:

Oven Safe

  • D3 Stainless Steel: 500F / 260C
  • D5 Brushed Stainless: 500F / 260C
  • Copper Core: 500F / 260C
  • Hard Anodized: 450F / 232C
  • Specialty: 500F / 260C

Note I’ve highlighted the Hard Anodized set there, as it’s slightly less heat tolerant in the oven.

Is All Clad Cookware Induction Compatible?

No, not every product in the All-Clad range is compatible with induction cooktops.

The following All-Clad models are induction compatible though.

  • D3 Stainless Steel
  • D5 Brushed Stainless
  • Copper Core
